Placidochromis milomo is living in the deeper regions of the intermediate zones from rocks to sand. They can be found on several spread lying places all around the lake. There are some geographic variants like this one, which is an F1 offspring example from parents which were caught in the neighbourhood of Mbenji Island.
It's a pity that breedexamples doesn't have the thick lips like there wildcaught parents because in the aquarium they haven't been fed in the right way. In the lake these fish feed themselves by placing there lips over a small gap between the rocks and suck insects and invertebrates out of it. They are able to do this very fast and because of this frequent contact with the rocks their lips are able to grow. In the aquarium you should try to offer the food for these fish in such a way that the feeding behaviour is the same as in the lake so that their lips can grow in the way like we know of the wildcaught examples.

In the middle of 2018 I (Thimo) bought a trio of this species, F1 offspring of the Mbenji-variant, young fish which were just 6-7 cm at that time but the gender was already clear, 1 male with 2 females. At this time (october 2018) the male in my tank is about 10 cm and the females are about 8-9 cm.
They are showing themselves quite well in this tank and the male is getting a nice color already. It is a pretty active male, he is chasing his females a lot and follows them through the entire aquarium. Most of the times they are quite tolerant towards all the other inhabitants however the male is sometimes being hunted by the female of Nimbochromis linni.

Placidochromis milomo is a quiet, peaceful cichlid which can be hold best with multiple females and other peaceful species in a large tank with a lot of swimming space and hiding places, mbunas are generally too aggresive.

In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with small insects and invertebrates which they find in gaps between the rocks. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, cyclops, artemias, mysis and shrimp-peas mix.
